What is self-care?

Are you stretched beyond capacity?
Are your emotions unpredictable?
Do you want to run away, even just for a moment?
Are you stuck in overwhelm mode?
Do you ever stand in the middle of your kitchen and have no idea what thought you were just having?

Yes. I’ve been there too.

Self-care gets talked about a lot, but it’s often misunderstood. We’ve been sold a version that looks shiny and indulgent, shopping sprees, massages, mani-pedis, fancy dinners out. And don’t get me wrong, those things can be lovely.

But most of the time, they simply mask what’s actually happening beneath the surface.

Self-Care Is Listening

True self-care begins when you stop and listen, not to trends, not to social media, but to your body and your inner child.

Ask yourself:
Does my body really want a massage right now?

Sometimes the answer is no. Sometimes your nervous system is screaming for quiet, not stimulation. A cup of tea. A good book. A long walk without a destination. Silence.

That’s self-care.

What’s Draining You?

Another often-overlooked part of self-care is identifying what drains you.

People.
Places.
Things.
A messy corner of your home.
Old clothes stuffed in your closet.
That pile you keep stepping around instead of clearing.

These things quietly create stress and anxiety.

Neaten a bookshelf or a single kitchen drawer. Clear out clothes you haven’t worn in a year, including the “I’ll get into these someday” jeans. Your environment affects your nervous system more than you realize.

People Are Part of Self-Care, Too

Let’s say the quiet part out loud: some people drain us.

Being selective about who deserves your time and energy is self-care. This was something I had to learn, again and again. And it leads us to that word many of us struggle with…

Boundaries.

Yes, boundaries.

They are just as important as a healthy diet. Boundaries around your time, your energy, and your home protect your nervous system. And often, the people who push against them the most are the ones who need them the most.

Remember Who You Are

You are a spiritual being with needs, sensitivity, and self-love to give, including to yourself.

You spend so much time caring for others: working, parenting, supporting partners, holding everything together. The list is endless. You deserve that same attention.

Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s restorative.

And yes, guilt may show up at first. That’s normal. But remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Put your mask on first so you can show up fully and with intention.

Self-Care

Simple Self-Care Practices (Start Small)

Even 30 minutes counts.

Lock yourself in your bedroom or reading room. Let the people in your house know not to disturb you. Choose one thing.

    • Take a bubble bath
    • Go for a walk (leave the headphones at home and notice what’s around you)
    • Visit a library or bookstore and wander
    • Do something crafty
    • Color with fun markers or pens
    • Journal
    • Cook a nourishing meal from fresh ingredients

Self-care isn’t about escaping your life.
It’s about creating space within it.
